Frivolous, feminist and anticapitalist: Welcome back to the stages of 'heiteres Musiktheater' (the East German version of operettas and musicals) in an age of real socialism! The State Operetta was an important artistic hub for the East German operetta scene from the 1950s onwards. We trace back bygone times and, together with excerpts from the popular 'Mein Freund Bunbury' and 'Messeschlager Gisela', get audiences listening to long forgotten operetta songs, ensembles and chansons by composers such as Gerd Natschinski, Herbert Kawan and Guido Masanetz. The night of music also performs acoustic forays into the neighbouring former 'people's republics' of Hungary and Romania, presenting quirkily quaint and provocatively witty rarities that once premiered on the stages of the State Operetta.
